Overview: Jaithmathang and Back

Departing on E- Bikes from Nelse lodge to the base of Mt Mckay before descending to the Pretty Valley hut and cattle yards that were first constructed in the 1930’s. Then ride towards Tawonga Huts and the hidden valley of the Jaithmathangs that lay beyond
Pretty Valley Pondage crossing and on the edge of the Tawonga Huts. Cattleman, John Ryder, constructed the first Tawonga Huts. This Hut was pulled down in 1888 by a horse that was tethered to the hut, but was replaced that same year. A second Hut was built in 1923. Currently 4 huts exist on a site 250 metres south of the original site, set amongst ageless snow-gums next to a small creek. The huts as a group are recognised as significant by the National Trust.

This trek provides the opportunity to Summit Mt Jaithmathang, 1852 m in a day, to encounter the stunning panorama of Mt Mc Kay and Feathertop that stand as a gate towards Mt Hotham on the great alpine walking trail.

It is very likely to see a Brumby herd that has been roaming the hills of Tawonga Huts for the last thirty years.

This trip was very special and we were able to see a number of brumby herds up close and personal. The wildflowers and historic huts were a highlight, the views spectacular. The trip also provided a great feel for the area and the layout – with a birds eye view thrown in!

Thanks Macca! Our day out with the family including our 3 teenage boys was a hoot. The e-bikes are powerful and I was amazed how they easily lasted the whole day. Scenery was superb and the food provided was way better than expected. It was an unforgettable day and we’ll book again for sure next time we visit.

What a fabulous weekend we had. Thanks Macca….the bikes, the hiking….the food, the snacks, laughs and chats were all top notch. I have been wanting to hike around Falls forever. The e-bikes ( loved Buttercup!) were awsome….made spinning around the mountain a hoot! It’s so great to see it sans snow with someone who knows their way around ….the snow gums are just so stunning, the brumbies, the huts…..we are planning our next trip already.
